What is a sick leave certificate for students?
A sick leave certificate for students is a signed note from a doctor stating that a student was unwell and unfit to attend school, college or university on set dates. The certificate names the student, the consultation date and the recommended leave period.
Schools ask for one to excuse absences and to decide on missed tests or deadlines. Universities that allow medical exam postponement usually grant it only when an authentic medical note from a licensed physician is submitted.
A certificate is not treatment.
The doctor records what you reported and the leave recommended. DrCertificate does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, so a student who needs care or medicine should see a doctor in person.
When do students need a sick leave certificate?
Students usually need a sick leave certificate when illness keeps them out of class for more than a day or when they miss an assessment.
Rules depend on the school. Check your student handbook for how many days of absence trigger a certificate requirement.
In the Philippines, DepEd Order No. 14, s. 2020, issued for COVID-19, says learners who were symptomatic in the last 14 days and have no relevant travel or exposure history shall seek medical advice and the necessary medical certificate before reporting back to school. Ask your school which certificate it expects.
Absence over more than one day
A doctor's note explains a run of missed classes.
Missed exam or test
Exam offices often ask for a medical certificate before rescheduling.
Late assignment
Lecturers may want proof of illness before extending a deadline.
Missed online classes
Illness that stops you studying from home counts too.
Which illnesses can a doctor consider for a sick leave certificate for students?
A doctor can consider common short term illnesses that keep students out of class, like colds, flu, fever and stomach upsets. The doctor decides case by case after the chat consultation and may decline when the details do not fit an online assessment.
Serious symptoms are different.
Severe pain, fainting, breathing trouble or symptoms that keep getting worse need in person care, not an online certificate.
Cold and flu
Blocked nose, cough and body aches that make class hard to attend.
Fever
A short fever that keeps you at home.
Stomach upset
Nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea over a day or two.
Migraine and headache
Headaches that stop you studying or sitting a test.

What should students check before applying?
Students should confirm their school's or university's medical leave rules before paying. Each school, college and university may set its own rules, so check your institution's current policy and whether it accepts online medical notes. Acceptance is always the receiving institution's decision.
Ask the school office or registrar the questions below.
Leave rules also differ across South East Asia. Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines each have their own guidance, and private universities often add rules of their own.
Before you start the form, have your ID ready with the name your school uses. Note the date your symptoms began and keep any format your school gave you.
Step 1: Which dates must the certificate cover?
Confirm the illness date and the full absence period the school wants documented.
Step 2: Is a set format or signature required?
A few institutions ask for a signed certificate or their own form.
Step 3: What doctor details are needed?
Check whether the school wants the doctor's qualification and registration number.
Step 4: What is the deadline?
Find out who receives the certificate, by when, and whether supporting documents are needed.
When is an online sick leave certificate for students not the right choice?
An online sick leave certificate for students is not the right choice in an emergency. Chest pain, trouble breathing or a serious injury need emergency services or a hospital straight away.
The certificate is not for insurance, legal purposes or submission in India. Applicants must be at least 16.
DrCertificate offers chat consultations only, with no video or in person visits. The platform does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, so a student who needs medicine or tests should see a doctor in person.
Who reviews your sick leave certificate for students request?
Every student request on DrCertificate is reviewed by an independent, certified doctor with an MBBS, MD or MS qualification. All doctors on the platform are registered with a medical council, and the doctor alone decides whether to issue a certificate.
DrCertificate is the platform in the middle. The platform runs the online form, takes payment through Stripe and emails the approved PDF, but does not make the medical decision.
Doctors decline about 2% of requests.
Declines happen when details are wrong, like a name that does not match the ID, or when the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent.

Frequently asked questions about a sick leave certificate for students
Acceptance is your school or university's decision, not DrCertificate's. Institutions set their own rules on medical notes, so check with the school office or registrar that online certificates are accepted before you apply. Ask about format, deadlines and whether a signed certificate is needed.
In most South East Asian countries, sick leave notes go up to 7 days for generic symptoms. The doctor sets the final dates based on your symptoms and the chat consultation, and may recommend a shorter period than you asked for. A longer illness usually needs an in person doctor.
The doctor decides which dates the certificate covers, and those dates must fit what you report in the consultation. Apply as soon as you feel unwell, because a past absence that your symptoms and timeline do not support may lead the doctor to decline the request.
If the doctor declines, no certificate is issued and the payment is not refunded. Doctors decline about 2% of requests, usually when the name and ID do not match or when the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent. Check your details carefully before you submit the form.
A sick leave certificate can support an exam postponement request if your university accepts online medical notes. Universities usually grant medical exam postponement only when a valid certificate from a registered doctor is submitted. Read your exam office rules on deadlines and format first, since late requests are often refused.
A sick leave certificate covers illness that stopped you studying, whether your classes were in person or online. Working students who can still work but need to stay home may fit the Work From Home option instead. Your school decides which document it needs for remote learning days.
