About this certificate

What is a general medical certificate?

A general medical certificate is an official document issued by a doctor after assessing your health. It confirms a medical consultation, illness, recovery or health status, depending on what you need it for.

Employers, schools, universities, travel providers and other organisations commonly ask for one as supporting health documentation.

Issued only after a certified doctor's assessment

What a certificate includes

  • Your correct personal details
  • Date of consultation
  • Relevant medical assessment
  • Purpose of the certificate
  • Recommended rest period, if applicable
  • Doctor's name and credentials
  • Signature or digital verification

What the certificate says depends on its purpose and the doctor's professional assessment.

Avoid fake certificates. Fake templates, edited documents or instant certificate generators without a doctor's involvement may be rejected and cause other problems. A genuine certificate is issued only after a real medical review.

What do employers, schools or airlines usually expect from a general medical certificate?

Most employers and schools expect a note from a registered doctor that names you, states the dates and gives a recommendation. Singapore shows how strict this can be. The Ministry of Manpower says that to qualify for paid sick leave, an employee must be certified unfit for work by a medical practitioner registered under the Medical Registration Act or Dental Registration Act.

If you work in Singapore, confirm with HR that your note meets this rule before applying.

Rules differ by employer, institution, airline and country.

In most South East Asian countries, sick leave and work from home notes go up to 7 days for generic symptoms. Your recipient may set a shorter limit, ask for its own form or refuse online notes altogether.

Before you apply, ask the recipient three things. Do they accept online medical certificates? Do they need their own form or format? How many days can one note cover?

What does a general medical certificate include?

A general medical certificate from DrCertificate includes your personal details, the dates it covers, the doctor's statement and the issuing doctor's details.

If your recipient needs a field the certificate does not show, ask them for their own form before you apply.

  • Patient details Your full name and ID details, which must match each other.
  • Dates The consultation date and the period the doctor recommends.
  • Doctor's statement The doctor's recommendation based on the chat review.
  • Doctor details The doctor's name, MBBS, MD or MS qualification and medical council registration.

How it works

Three simple steps, with a doctor checking every request

  1. Step 1: Fill in the online application

Add your details and the reason for your request. You may be asked to share vitals or other measurements through a secure link sent by email.

  2. Step 2: A certified doctor reviews your request

The doctor assesses the information you provide and decides whether a certificate is medically appropriate. They may decline a request.

  3. Step 3: Get your certificate by email, if approved

Approved certificates are sent electronically to the email address you provide.

Which option should you choose on the form for a general medical certificate?

Choose the Sick Leave option for a general medical certificate. On the form it reads Medical Certificate, Sick Leave, for university or work.

In your answers, say that you need a general medical certificate and who will receive it, for example your employer or school. That tells the doctor what the note is for.

If no option fits, email care@drcertificate.com before paying.

What will the doctor ask you for a general medical certificate?

The doctor will ask about your symptoms, when they started and which dates the certificate should cover. Expect questions on how the illness affects your work or study and whether you have seen another doctor.

Give your name and ID as they appear on your identity document, letter for letter. A mismatch is one of the reasons a request is declined.

Records from an earlier clinic visit can help, so mention them if you have them. The doctor may ask follow-up questions in the chat before deciding.

Reply accurately and without delay.

Where can a general medical certificate not be used?

A general medical certificate from DrCertificate cannot be used in India, for legal purposes or for insurance. Applicants must be at least 16 years old.

The service is for suitable non emergency situations only. If you have chest pain, trouble breathing or a sudden severe symptom, contact local emergency services or go to the nearest hospital straight away.

The recipient decides whether to accept the certificate. Check with them before you apply.

What happens if the doctor cannot issue your general medical certificate?

If the doctor cannot issue your general medical certificate, you will not receive one and the payment is not refunded. Doctors decline about 2% of requests, usually because the name and ID do not match or the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent.

A chat review has limits.

When symptoms call for a physical examination or tests, the doctor may decline and suggest an in person visit to a local clinic. Payment is non refundable in every case except one, which is a verified technical fault reported within 24 hours. Treat the fee as payment for the doctor's review, not for a guaranteed certificate.

If you think a technical fault affected your request, write to support the same day.

Contact care@drcertificate.com with any question about your request.

Who issues your general medical certificate?

  • Certified doctors

Each request goes to a doctor with an MBBS, MD or MS qualification. All doctors on the platform are registered medical council doctors.

  • The doctor decides

DrCertificate is a platform. The doctor alone decides whether to issue a certificate, and doctors decline about 2% of requests, usually when details do not match or symptoms are inconsistent.

  • Medical reviewer

Will my employer, school or airline accept a general medical certificate?

Acceptance depends on the recipient's own policy, so DrCertificate cannot promise it. Each employer, school or airline sets its own rules on online medical notes.

A recipient who wants to verify the note can look up the issuing doctor using the registration details on the certificate. All doctors on the platform are registered with a medical council.

If the recipient insists on its own form, ask them before you apply. A standard PDF certificate may not replace a form they require.

A general medical certificate is a broad doctor's note, while each related certificate answers one narrow question. Pick the one that matches what your recipient asked for.
