About this certificate

What is an unfit to fly certificate?

An unfit to fly certificate is a medical document issued by a doctor. It states that you have been assessed and are currently not medically suitable to travel by air.

Airlines or travel companies may ask for one when you need to cancel, postpone or change travel plans because of a health condition.

Issued only after a certified doctor's assessment

What a certificate includes

  • Your correct personal details
  • Date of consultation
  • Doctor's medical assessment
  • Recommendation on fitness to fly
  • Restriction period, if applicable
  • Doctor's name and credentials
  • Signature or digital verification

These details help airlines or employers understand the medical reason affecting your travel.

Avoid fake certificates. Fake certificates, edited templates or automatically generated documents can be rejected by airlines. A genuine certificate is issued only after a proper assessment by a qualified doctor.

Who it's for

When you might need an unfit to fly certificate

It helps explain, based on a medical assessment, why travelling may not be recommended for you right now.

Illness before you travel

Sudden illness, infection or injury close to your travel date can make flying unsuitable.

May be needed for

  • Sudden illness before travel
  • Severe or contagious infections
  • Recovery after surgery or treatment
  • Injury affecting safe travel
  • Pregnancy-related travel restrictions

Flight cancellation or changes

Many airlines ask for supporting documents when you cancel or change a flight for medical reasons.

Can help support

  • Flight cancellation
  • Date changes
  • Refund applications
  • Missed trips due to illness

Work or study travel

Employers and schools may ask for proof when illness stops a planned trip.

They may ask to see

  • The date of your medical assessment
  • The nature of the medical concern
  • The doctor's recommendation on travel
  • When travel was not advised

Common reasons someone may be unfit to fly

Cabin pressure changes, limited movement and long journeys put extra stress on the body. Common reasons include:

  • High fever or serious infections
  • Severe respiratory symptoms
  • Recent surgery
  • Significant injuries
  • Certain heart or lung conditions
  • Severe pain affecting travel

Check the requirements first

Each organisation has its own rules. Before you submit, check whether a specific format, extra medical reports or airline forms are needed by:

  • Airlines
  • Travel agencies
  • Employers or institutions

Every request is assessed individually. Issuing a certificate, its content and its duration are at the reviewing doctor's discretion. Acceptance depends on the organisation you submit it to.

What do employers, schools or airlines usually expect from an unfit to fly certificate?

Most recipients want an unfit to fly certificate that states plainly that you are not fit to fly, names the dates involved and shows the doctor's details. Beyond that, expectations differ between airlines, employers, schools and countries.

Airlines hold the final word.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority says most airlines have medical advisors who clear passengers as fit to fly, and that the final decision on whether to carry a passenger is the airline's. Cebu Pacific is one carrier with written rules. When a passenger files a medical case request, Cebu Pacific asks for a valid medical certificate stating not fit to fly, with the doctor's signature, PRC number and official letterhead.

If you fly Cebu Pacific, confirm before you apply that a certificate from a doctor on DrCertificate will satisfy that standard.

Before paying, ask your recipient three questions.

  • Do you accept online medical notes? A yes here matters more than anything else on the certificate.
  • Do you need your own form or format? An airline or employer with its own form may not accept a separate certificate.
  • What details and deadline apply? Ask which dates, names or booking details must appear and how soon after the flight you must send the certificate.

What does an unfit to fly certificate include?

An unfit to fly certificate from DrCertificate sets out who you are, what the doctor concluded and who the doctor is. Each part sits in its own zone, which lets an airline or employer find it fast.

If your recipient needs a set layout, compare their request with this list before you apply.

  • Your details Your full name as entered in the form, which should match your ID and booking.
  • The doctor's statement The doctor's opinion that you are not medically fit to fly.
  • Dates The date of your consultation and the period during which you should not fly.
  • Doctor's details The doctor's name, qualification (MBBS, MD or MS) and medical council registration details.

How it works

Three simple steps, with a doctor checking every request

  1. Step 1: Fill in the online application

Add your details and the reason for your request. You may be asked to share vitals or other measurements through a secure link sent by email.

  2. Step 2: A certified doctor reviews your request

The doctor assesses the information you provide and decides whether a certificate is medically appropriate. They may decline a request.

  3. Step 3: Get your certificate by email, if approved

Approved certificates are sent electronically to the email address you provide.

Which option should you choose on the form for an unfit to fly certificate?

For an unfit to fly certificate, choose Medical Certificate Unfit to Travel on the application form. The form has no separate flight option, and Unfit to Travel covers air travel.

In your form answers, say you need the certificate for a booked flight, give the flight date and describe when your symptoms began. If none of the options fits your situation, email care@drcertificate.com before you pay.

What will the doctor ask you for an unfit to fly certificate?

The doctor will ask about your symptoms, when they started and the date of the flight you cannot take. Clear dates help the doctor judge whether flying is unsafe for you during that period.

Expect questions on how you feel today, any recent illness or injury and the medicines you take. If you already have papers, for instance a recent clinic note, test results or your booking confirmation, mention them in the chat and share them if the doctor asks.

The doctor may send follow up questions. Reply promptly and keep your answers consistent with your form, because details that do not match are a reason for a decline.

Where can an unfit to fly certificate not be used?

An unfit to fly certificate from DrCertificate cannot be submitted in India, used for legal purposes or used for insurance. Applicants must be at least 16 years old.

The service is for non emergency situations only. If you have chest pain, trouble breathing, heavy bleeding or a sudden severe illness, contact local emergency services or go to the nearest hospital now.

Acceptance rests with the recipient. Check with your airline, employer or school first.

What happens if the doctor cannot issue your unfit to fly certificate?

If the doctor cannot issue your unfit to fly certificate, you will not receive one and your payment is not refunded. Doctors on DrCertificate decline about 2% of requests.

Declines happen when details are wrong, for instance a name that does not match the ID, or when the symptoms and details you share are inconsistent. A doctor will also decline when your condition needs a physical examination or tests that a chat cannot replace. In that case, see a doctor in person at a local clinic or hospital.

Payments are non refundable, with one exception. A verified technical fault reported within 24 hours may be refunded.

What does an unfit to fly certificate cost?

An unfit to fly certificate costs 25 SGD in Singapore, 399 pesos in the Philippines and 30 MYR in Malaysia. Prices in other countries depend on the country.

The fee covers the doctor's review and, if approved, the PDF certificate by email. You pay through Stripe, and payment is non refundable, even if the doctor declines.

Who issues your unfit to fly certificate?

  • Certified doctors

Each request goes to a doctor with an MBBS, MD or MS qualification. All doctors on the platform are registered medical council doctors.

  • The doctor decides

DrCertificate is a platform. The doctor alone decides whether to issue a certificate, and doctors decline about 2% of requests, usually when details do not match or symptoms are inconsistent.

  • Medical reviewer

Will my employer, school or airline accept an unfit to fly certificate?

Your employer, school or airline will accept an unfit to fly certificate only if its own policy allows online medical notes. DrCertificate cannot decide that for them. Ask before you apply.

A recipient who wants to verify the certificate can check the doctor's name and registration details on it with the medical council where the doctor is registered. All doctors on the platform are registered with a medical council.

Airlines need extra care.

Under UK Civil Aviation Authority guidance, the airline makes the final decision on carrying a passenger, and its medical advisors may look at your case. If the recipient insists on its own form, ask whether that form must be signed by its own doctor. In that case, this service is not the right fit.

An unfit to fly certificate says you should not fly, while a fit to fly certificate says you are well enough to board. A sick leave certificate covers time off work or study and says nothing about flying.

Pick the one that matches what your recipient needs to hear.
