What is a fit to fly certificate?

A fit to fly certificate is a doctor's statement that a passenger's current health will not put them or the flight at risk in the air. The operative line on the document openly confirms that the traveller is medically able to fly on the dates written there.

A fit to fly certificate does not diagnose an illness or treat one.

The certificate also does not oblige an airline to carry you. The UK Civil Aviation Authority explains that most airlines have medical advisors who clear passengers as fit to fly, and that the final decision on carrying a passenger rests with the airline.

People also call it a fit to travel certificate, a fitness to fly letter or medical clearance for air travel.

When might you need a fit to fly certificate?

  • You might need a fit to fly certificate when an airline asks for medical clearance because a health condition could be affected by the flight. Airlines are the recipients that typically ask passengers in these situations for clearance.

  • Recent surgery is a common trigger. The CDC Yellow Book says travellers who have had recent surgery, including intra abdominal, cardiothoracic or intraocular procedures, should consult their physician before flying. Later pregnancy is another, since carriers set their own cut off points. A recent hospital stay, a serious illness or an ongoing heart or lung condition can also lead an airline to ask.

  • Travel agencies, employers sending staff abroad, school trip organisers and sports clubs flying to events may ask for the same proof.

  • A different certificate fits better if you cannot fly at all. Choose an unfit to fly certificate for that, or a sick leave certificate if you need time off work or study.

What do employers, schools or airlines usually expect from a fit to fly certificate?

Airlines usually expect a fit to fly certificate to name the passenger as shown on the passport, state the travel dates and say plainly that the passenger is fit to fly. Employers and schools arranging overseas trips usually want the same basic details.

Rules differ by airline, employer, institution and country.

One carrier may accept a general fit to fly letter, while another asks for its own medical information form, often called a MEDIF, signed by the treating doctor. Airlines also set their own limits on how recently the certificate must be dated.

Before you apply, ask the recipient whether online medical notes are accepted, whether you must use their own form and how recent the certificate date needs to be. Travellers in Singapore and Thailand can find local details on the country pages.

What does a fit to fly certificate include?

A fit to fly certificate from DrCertificate includes your personal details, the dates it covers, the doctor's fit to fly statement and the issuing doctor's details. Your name and ID details need to match your passport or travel ID.

Fitness notes are generally valid for 30 days in most South East Asian countries. Your airline's own dating rule still comes first.

  • Patient details Your full name and ID details as entered on the form.
  • Dates The date of the consultation and the travel dates the statement covers.
  • Doctor statement A declaration that you are fit to travel by air on the dates stated.
  • Doctor details The doctor's name, qualification of MBBS, MD or MS, and medical council registration details.

How do you get a fit to fly certificate in 4 steps?

You get a fit to fly certificate in four steps covering the form, payment, doctor review and email delivery. Everything happens online through text, with no video or in person consultation at any stage.

Which option should you choose on the form for a fit to fly certificate?

Choose the Medical Fitness Certificate option on the form for a fit to fly certificate. In the form, write that you need a fit to fly certificate, then add your flight date, your airline and why the airline asked for clearance.

Not sure any option fits? Email care@drcertificate.com before you pay.

What will the doctor ask you for a fit to fly certificate?

The doctor will ask about your current health, the condition behind the airline's request and the dates that matter, including your flight date and when any surgery, illness or diagnosis happened. Expect questions about current symptoms and any medicines you take.

Supporting documents help. A hospital discharge letter, a recent note from your treating doctor or the airline's message asking for clearance gives useful context, so mention them or share them when asked.

The doctor may ask follow-up questions in the chat before deciding. Answer them accurately, because inconsistent details are a common reason for a decline.

Where can a fit to fly certificate not be used?

A fit to fly certificate from DrCertificate cannot be used for submission in India, for legal purposes or for insurance. Applicants must be at least 16 years old.

The service is for suitable non emergency situations only. If you have chest pain, trouble breathing or another urgent symptom, seek local emergency care straight away.

Acceptance is always the recipient's decision, so check with your airline before you apply.

What happens if the doctor cannot issue your fit to fly certificate?

If the doctor cannot issue your fit to fly certificate, you will not receive one and your payment is not refunded. Doctors decline about 2% of requests, usually when the name and ID do not match or when the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent.

An online review cannot replace an examination. A doctor may decline when your condition is unstable, when tests or an in person check are needed, when you had major surgery very recently, or when the airline wants its own form signed by your treating doctor.

The only refund exception is a verified technical fault reported within 24 hours. For help, email care@drcertificate.com.

  • Certified doctors

Will my employer, school or airline accept a fit to fly certificate?

Your employer, school or airline will accept a fit to fly certificate only if its own policy allows online medical notes. DrCertificate encourages every customer to confirm this with the recipient before applying.

A recipient who wants to verify the certificate can look up the issuing doctor with the relevant medical council, using the name and registration details on the PDF.

An online certificate will not replace an airline's own form. If the airline insists on one, ask your treating doctor to fill it in.

A fit to fly certificate says you can travel by air on stated dates, while an unfit to fly certificate says you should not travel as booked. Picking the wrong one wastes the fee, since payments are non refundable.
