The short answer on online certificates versus clinic visits

An online medical certificate from DrCertificate suits you if you have mild, non emergency symptoms or need a fitness or work from home note, and your employer, school or airline accepts online notes. An independent doctor decides whether to issue one. Choose a clinic visit if you need an examination, tests, treatment or urgent care.

Before you apply

Price
It depends on your country, for example 25 SGD in Singapore, 399 pesos in the Philippines or 30 MYR in Malaysia.

Doctors decline about 2% of requests, usually when details do not match or symptoms are inconsistent. Payments are non refundable, except a verified technical fault reported within 24 hours.
How long a note covers
In most South East Asian countries, sick leave and work from home notes go up to 7 days for generic symptoms, and fitness notes are generally valid for 30 days. The doctor decides.

What are the main differences between an online certificate and a clinic visit?

Four facts settle the choice for most people.

  • A doctor decides

Every DrCertificate request is reviewed by an independent doctor with an MBBS, MD or MS, who may issue or decline the certificate.

  • Online is for non emergency cases

Online certificates suit mild symptoms and fitness notes. Urgent or worsening symptoms need a clinic or emergency department.

  • Day limits apply

In most South East Asian countries, sick leave and work from home notes go up to 7 days for generic symptoms.

  • Acceptance is up to the receiver

The employer, school or airline decides whether to accept an online note, so confirm before you apply.

What is an online medical certificate?

An online medical certificate is a document issued by a registered doctor after a remote consultation, giving the doctor's opinion on your fitness or your need for rest. On DrCertificate, that consultation happens through a digital chat, and an approved certificate arrives as a PDF.

The certificate records the doctor's opinion, the dates covered and the purpose. The certificate is not a diagnosis, a treatment plan or a prescription, because the platform does not diagnose, treat or prescribe.

Four options sit on the DrCertificate form. Sick Leave covers work or university absence and general medical notes. Medical Fitness covers employee, student, sports, fit to fly and fit to work certificates. Work From Home and Unfit to Travel are separate options for those two needs.

A clinic certificate differs in one way. The doctor examines you in person and can order tests. An online note relies on what you share, so the online route suits simpler cases.

When do you need an online medical certificate instead of a clinic visit?

  • You need an online medical certificate when an organisation asks for written proof from a doctor and your situation is to describe in a chat. Short sick leave from work, a missed university class and a fitness check before a new job are the usual cases.

  • The person asking is often HR, a school office, a sports club or an airline.

  • Organisations ask for a doctor's note for practical reasons. Employers use it to approve paid sick days and keep records. Schools use it to excuse missed exams or poor attendance. Airlines and travel providers want to know a passenger is fit to fly, or why a booking must change because the passenger is unfit to travel.

  • A manager allowing a few days at home may want a work from home note so the arrangement is on file.

  • A clinic visit makes more sense when the organisation insists on a physical exam, a stamp from a local clinic or test results.

Which one do they want? Ask before you apply.

The table below compares an online medical certificate or clinic visit side by side. In both routes the doctor decides the number of days or the fitness outcome case by case.

If you need an examination, tests or treatment, an in person visit is more suitable.

Who issues an online medical certificate?

An independent doctor with an MBBS, MD or MS qualification issues every certificate on DrCertificate. The doctor reviews your request, chats with you and makes the medical decision, and every doctor on the platform is registered with a medical council.

DrCertificate is the platform in the middle, run by Health Venture OU. The company connects applicants with doctors, handles the form and payment, and emails the result. DrCertificate does not diagnose, treat or prescribe.

The decision to issue belongs to the doctor alone.

A clinic certificate comes from the doctor who sees you in person. In both routes, the weight of the note rests on the doctor's registration and the details printed on the certificate, so keep the PDF in case your organisation asks who issued it.

How do you get an online medical certificate, step by step?

Getting an online medical certificate from DrCertificate takes five steps, from the form to a PDF in your inbox. The whole request happens in writing, with no video or in person consultation at any stage.

A decision usually takes about 30 minutes.

  1. Step 1: Choose the right option

Pick Sick Leave for work, university or general medical notes. Pick Medical Fitness for employee, student, sports or fit to fly notes. Work From Home and Unfit to Travel are separate options.

  2. Step 2: Fill in the form accurately

Use your legal name and the ID number that matches it. Describe your symptoms or purpose plainly, because mismatched or inconsistent details are a common reason for a decline.

  3. Step 3: Pay through Stripe

Payment is taken through Stripe when you submit. The fee is non refundable, even if the doctor does not issue a certificate.

  4. Step 4: Chat with the doctor

An independent doctor reviews your request in a digital chat, can ask follow up questions and decides whether to issue the certificate.

  5. Step 5: Receive your PDF

An approved certificate arrives by email as a PDF. Check every detail before you send it to your employer, school or airline.

What should an online medical certificate include?

An online medical certificate should show your full name, the dates it covers, its purpose and the issuing doctor's details. Organisations also look for the date of issue, so they can trace when the decision was made.

Run the quick check below before you submit it.

Your organisation may have its own format. Ask HR or the school office whether they need their own form, set wording or a local clinic stamp before you apply. A certificate cannot be corrected once issued, unless the fault is from the medical team, so getting the details right at the start saves a second application.

  • Your name

Matches your ID and the name your employer or school holds on file.

  • Dates

Cover the days you were away or need to work from home.

  • Purpose

Fits the request, for example sick leave rather than fitness.

  • Doctor details

Show who issued the certificate and their qualification.

Will your employer or school accept an online medical certificate?

Acceptance of an online medical certificate is decided by the organisation that receives it, not by DrCertificate or the doctor. Employers, schools and airlines each set their own rules, and DrCertificate encourages every applicant to check that online notes are accepted before applying.

A certificate is usually questioned for one of four reasons. The wrong certificate type was chosen. The name does not match the ID on file. The dates do not cover the absence. Or the organisation only takes notes from a local clinic or a doctor it names.

If HR or a school office queries your note, ask what they need. Send the PDF again from the original email and point them to the doctor details on it.

If they want an in person exam, book a clinic visit.

The original email is your record, so keep it.

When is an online medical certificate not the right choice?

An online medical certificate is not the right choice when your symptoms are urgent, severe or getting worse. DrCertificate is for suitable non emergency situations only, and the doctor may decline any request that is not safe to handle by chat.

On its flu page, the NHS says to seek emergency care if you get sudden chest pain, have severe difficulty breathing or start coughing up blood. Any of those means a hospital, not a form.

The service has firm limits beyond that. Certificates are not for submission in India, not for legal purposes and must not be used for insurance. Applicants must be at least 16. Recovery and caretaker certificates are not offered.

Need more days than the doctor allows? Book a clinic visit.

Online medical certificates in Singapore, Malaysia and the rest of South East Asia

DrCertificate serves people in 10 South East Asian countries, and sick leave and fitness rules differ in each one. Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei are covered. So are Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. The list also includes the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, with local pages for Manila, Cebu and Davao.

National labour laws set the baseline for paid sick leave, and each employer adds its own policy on top. In most South East Asian countries, sick leave and work from home notes go up to 7 days for generic symptoms, and fitness notes are generally valid for 30 days.

Check the official rules on your national labour or manpower ministry website, for example the Ministry of Manpower in Singapore or the Department of Labor and Employment in the Philippines.

Then confirm with your employer, school or airline before you apply.

What does an online medical certificate cost and how long does it take?

An online medical certificate from DrCertificate costs 25 SGD in Singapore, 399 pesos in the Philippines and 30 MYR in Malaysia. Prices for other served countries are shown on the form before you pay.

Fitness cases are handled from 9 am to 9 pm IST Monday to Saturday and 10 am to 8 pm IST on Sunday.

Payments are non refundable, including when the doctor declines. The one exception is a verified technical fault within 24 hours.
