What is a medical certificate for urinary tract infection?

A medical certificate for urinary tract infection is a note from a certified doctor confirming that you consulted them about UTI symptoms and, where the doctor agrees, recommending rest or work from home for a set period.

DrCertificate does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. The certificate records the doctor's assessment from your chat and does not replace a urine test or treatment from a clinic.

For a UTI, the Sick Leave option fits most cases. The Work From Home option suits people who feel able to work but need to stay close to a toilet. Most people show the certificate to an employer, university or school.

Which kinds of UTI can a doctor consider online?

A doctor can consider a mild, uncomplicated lower urinary tract infection for an online certificate. In practice that usually means a bladder infection or an irritated urethra with burning and frequent trips to the toilet.

Kidney infections are different.

A kidney infection happens when bacteria travel up from the bladder, and the illness is often heavier, with fever, shivering, back pain and vomiting. MedlinePlus says bladder infection symptoms most often go away within 24 to 48 hours after treatment begins, but a kidney infection may take 1 week or longer.

Repeat infections and UTIs during pregnancy need a closer look as well. A chat consultation cannot examine you or test your urine. For those forms the doctor may decline and point you toward in person care.

The doctor decides the period of rest, if any, after reading your answers. No set number of days is promised.

  • Bladder infection

Burning when passing urine, urgency and lower belly discomfort. The most common form a doctor can consider by chat.

  • Urethral irritation

Stinging and frequent urination without fever. Often suitable for a chat consultation.

  • Kidney infection

Fever, back pain under the ribs and feeling very unwell. Needs in person care, not an online certificate.

What should you tell the doctor about your UTI?

Tell the doctor what you feel, when the UTI symptoms started, how bad they are and the dates you need covered.

Honest, consistent answers help the doctor reach a decision.

  • Your symptoms

Burning or pain when you pee, needing to go often or urgently, cloudy or strong smelling urine, and pain low in the belly.

  • Onset, duration and severity

The date symptoms began, whether they are easing or getting worse, and how they affect work or study.

  • Tests or reports you already have

Any urine test result, clinic note or prescription from a recent visit.

  • The leave period you are asking for

The start and end dates you want the certificate to cover.

When is a UTI not suitable for an online certificate?

A urinary tract infection is not suitable for an online certificate when signs point to a kidney infection or an infection that is spreading. The NHS advises asking for an urgent doctor appointment for the signs below.

DrCertificate is only for suitable non emergency situations. The platform does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and the doctor may decline a request that cannot be judged safely by chat.

If any of these signs apply, see a doctor in person today.

  • Abnormal temperature A very high or very low temperature.
  • Symptoms not settling Symptoms that get worse quickly or do not improve within 48 hours.
  • Belly or back pain Pain in the lower tummy or in the back just under the ribs.
  • Blood in your pee Any visible blood in the urine.

Which certificate should you choose for a UTI?

Most people with a UTI choose the Sick Leave option, for university or work. The table matches each form option to a common UTI situation.

What happens if the doctor does not issue a certificate for a UTI?

If the doctor does not issue a certificate for your UTI, you receive no certificate and the payment is not refunded. Issuing is always the independent decision of the doctor who reviews your chat.

Doctors decline about 2% of requests.
