What is a medical certificate for dental pain?

A medical certificate for dental pain is a note from a certified doctor stating that, after a chat consultation, you needed time away from work or study, or a change to how you work. The certificate covers the dates the doctor approves.

The certificate does not treat your tooth. DrCertificate does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and a dentist is still the person who fixes the cause of the pain.

For toothache, the sick leave option is the usual choice. A work from home note suits people who can still work but should not commute or talk on calls for hours while the pain settles. Most people show the certificate to an employer, an HR team, a school or a university.

Which kinds of dental pain can a doctor consider online?

A doctor can consider common, non emergency dental pain for a certificate when the pain stops you working, studying or sleeping well. The doctor looks at what you describe and decides if a rest period makes sense.

The doctor decides whether you need rest, and for how long, based on the consultation. No set number of days applies to any form of dental pain. In most South East Asian countries, sick leave and work from home notes go up to 7 days for generic symptoms.

Not every dental problem suits a chat consultation.

A swollen face, swelling that spreads, or trouble breathing or swallowing needs a dentist or an emergency department, not a certificate. The warning signs section below lists those signs in full.

  • Toothache from decay

Throbbing or constant pain in one tooth, often worse with hot, cold or sweet food.

  • Gum pain and swelling

Sore, tender or bleeding gums around one or more teeth.

  • Wisdom tooth pain

Pain at the back of the jaw as a wisdom tooth comes through or presses on nearby teeth.

  • Cracked or sensitive tooth

Sharp pain when biting down or when the tooth meets hot or cold drinks.

  • Pain after dental work

Soreness after an extraction, filling or root canal treatment that makes eating or speaking hard.

What should you tell the doctor about your dental pain?

Tell the doctor where the pain is, what it feels like, when it started and how it affects your day. Clear and consistent details help the doctor decide.

If you already saw a dentist, say so and mention what they told you.

  • Symptoms

The type of pain, any swelling, sensitivity or pain when chewing.

  • Onset and duration

The date the pain started and whether it is getting better or worse.

  • Severity

Whether the pain stops you sleeping, eating, speaking or working.

  • Reports you have

Any dentist notes, scans or treatment records from a recent visit.

  • Leave requested

The dates you are asking for and whether you need sick leave or work from home.

When is dental pain not suitable for an online certificate?

Dental pain is not suitable for an online certificate when it comes with swelling around the eye or neck, or swelling in the mouth or neck that makes it hard to breathe, swallow or speak. The NHS says those signs need an emergency department straight away.

The NHS also says to see a dentist if toothache lasts more than 2 days.

Get in person care as well after a knocked out tooth, a hard blow to the face, or bleeding after an extraction that will not stop.

DrCertificate is only for suitable non emergency situations. The platform does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and a doctor may decline any request that is not right for a chat consultation. Your health comes before any certificate, and a dentist or emergency team can look inside your mouth in a way a chat never can.

Which certificate should you choose for dental pain?

The sick leave option fits most people with dental pain. Pick the option that matches what your employer or school needs to know.

If the doctor does not issue a certificate, you will not receive one and your payment is not refunded. The decision belongs to the independent doctor alone.
